The Dog Meet and Greet Guide: Bichon Frise sitting with travel bag, ready for specialist handover protocol - Small Dog Adoptions

The Dog Meet & Greet Guide: Specialist Handover Protocol

A successful dog meet and greet is not measured by excitement, but by calmness. At Small Dog Adoptions, our philosophy is rooted in canine psychology and the specific emotional needs of purebred small breeds. We facilitate a professional, home-to-home handover protocol designed to protect the emotional well-being of the companion and ensure complete peace of mind for both families.

This dog meet and greet guide outlines the essential steps for your dog meet and greet, ensuring a dignified, low-arousal environment for a seamless transition.

The Golden Rule: The Power of Low Arousal

In specialist dog behaviorism, high excitement is often a mask for stress. For sensitive purebreds like Yorkshire Terriers, French Bulldogs, and Miniature Schnauzers, a dog meet & greet filled with loud voices, sudden movements, and high energy can trigger a ‘fight or flight’ response rather than building trust.

Our protocol enforces a strictly low-arousal environment. By removing pressure, we allow the companion to remain observant, emotionally secure, and capable of making positive associations at their own pace during the first meeting.

Canine Fact:

A dog’s sense of smell is 10,000 times more powerful than a human’s. Let the scent do the talking before you use your voice.

Protocol for the Adopting Family: Becoming a “Safe” Presence

As the guest entering the companion’s current home, your goal during the dog meet and greet is to prove you are a safe, predictable presence.

  • The Calm Arrival: Enter the home quietly. Do not ring the doorbell if it can be avoided (a text message to the host is preferred).
  • Greet the Humans First: Maintain a relaxed, seated conversation with the current owner. Completely ignore the dog when you first sit down. No eye contact, no speaking to them, and no reaching out.
  • The Scent Check: Allow the dog to approach you on their terms. They experience the world through scent. Let them map your scent profile without any interference. Keep your hands relaxed in your lap.
  • The 5-Second Rule: If the dog initiates physical contact (nudging your hand or leaning against you), you may gently pet them under the chin or on the chest—never over the top of the head—for exactly five seconds. Stop and observe. If they lean in for more, you may continue. If they step away, respect their space.
  • Move with Intention: Avoid sudden movements, leaning over the dog, or loud exclamations.

Protocol for the Rehoming Family: Managing the Environment

As the host, you are the dog’s emotional anchor. Your calmness dictates their calmness. Your primary role is to manage the environment to prevent any resource guarding or territorial anxiety.

  • Remove Triggers: Before the new family arrives, pick up all food bowls, high-value chew toys, and bones. This eliminates the risk of resource guarding. Ensure fresh water is available in a neutral space.
  • The Strategic Leash: Have your companion on a loose, comfortable lead when the family arrives. This provides subtle, silent control without the need for verbal corrections. Note: If your dog is highly leash-reactive, utilize a secure, enclosed garden space instead.
  • Emotional Regulation & The Tea Strategy: Greet the new family warmly and guide them to sit down immediately. A highly effective technique is to offer your guests a cup of tea, coffee, or a fresh cool drink. The simple act of sitting back and sharing a beverage naturally grounds the energy in the room, slows down human movements, and signals to your dog that these visitors are relaxed, approved, and safe.
  • Facilitate the Bond: Once the dog is calm and showing relaxed body language (soft eyes, loose tail), you can provide the adopting family with a few of the dog’s favorite treats to offer in a flat, open palm.
  • Total Honesty: Use this time to share the nuances of your dog’s daily routine, their specific quirks, and their dietary schedule. Total transparency ensures a seamless continuation of care.

The SDA Standard:

We eliminate the ‘Waiting Room’ effect. Direct transitions are the most compassionate gift for a sensitive purebred.

The Final Transition: A Dignified Handover

Small Dog Adoptions & Rehoming operates exclusively on a direct home-to-home model to eliminate the detrimental ‘waiting room’ effect. Multiple visits often create a cycle of confusion, anticipation, and abandonment anxiety for purebred companions.

Once the match is confirmed during the dog meet and greet, the handover should be swift and definitive.

By moving the dog directly into their new environment the very same day, we allow the vital decompression phase to begin immediately in their permanent home. Drawn-out goodbyes elevate anxiety for both the humans and the dog. A confident, calm departure is the greatest final gift you can give your companion.
